Bill Hickey is a retired pilot from the 162 TFW where he was an instructor for 14 years in the ANG A-7 and F-16A Fighter Weapons Schools and 23 years of flying fighter aircraft. In this presentation, Viet Nam and Desert Storm Era Air defenses will be briefly reviewed to highlight the tactical advantages and vulnerabilities of each side. Then, currently developed threat systems will be discussed to show their state of technology and how it significantly changes the tactical landscape. Finally, current US weapon systems procurements will be reviewed to unveil their applicability to this threat environment. These systems include stealth, off board countermeasures, integrated sensor technology, multimode guidance systems, small diameter bombs, drones, and Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL).
