This Ground Power Unit provides electrical power to the SR-71 during ground operations prior to take off.
Middle photo above shows parascoping drive mechanism for engaging Pratt & Whitney J57 engine during starting. Mechanism is shown in the retracted position. It would be extended and engage the J57 from below.
Bottom photo shows the two large block GM V8s geared to the parascoping engagement gear.
